Working with a CMS

Over the years we have worked with many different content management systems (CMS). A CMS gives a web site owner the ability to make changes to their website, hopefully without the need to know html. We have direct experience developing websites using a variety of CMS Platforms including WordPress, Joomla, Subdreamer, Mambo, and custom built CMS’s using PHP. We were not completely satisfied with any of these options. Many were not end-user friendly, yielded poor search engine rankings or did not provide much support. In January of 2009, after much research, we started using Drupal. Since that time all our websites are being built exclusively within the Drupal framework. Drupal provides many advantages over other CMS’s and is clearly our top choice for web site development. Drupal is the best option when you look at it from a programming, design and client usability perspective.

The Drupal Advantage

Drupal is an open source platform and therefore FREE. The Drupal community is very LARGE and ACTIVE, meaning the framework continues to evolve and grow. In fact, the Drupal community is the largest open source community of independent developers for any CMS. Drupal has such an active community that new modules, updates, and features are released on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. This is healthy for the Drupal community as well as the web development industry. Drupal is a COMPLETE web site platform, meaning it has add-on modules to help you do just about anything. There are over 10,000 Drupal modules! Modules are simply snippets of code that add functionality to a website. They fit together like a puzzle and work together with little or no technical knowledge. Examples of modules include Ubercart for ecommerce, the FAQ module, Photo Gallery or a Calendar.  All are easy to implement and add powerful functionality to a web site.

The Complete Package

Drupal is rated very highly for search engine optimization (SEO), web 2.0 functionality, and overall scalability. Built into the core of Drupal are powerful features such as user management, dynamic navigation, domain name aliases, and a comprehensive site search. Our basic Drupal installation also includes dozens of additional modules centered on usability, SEO and user interaction. For these reasons, we believe Drupal has become a game changer in the world of web development.
